Oil Painting by Walter deMaris

Scene - In front of Raleigh Tavern on the main street of Williamsburg a stage coach is show while a group of Virginia Gentlemen hunters ride by.

Detail- After a long delay in getting this painting from Mr. deMaris, of whom I had ordered it specially painted from authentic material I supplied, I finally telephoned. Mrs. deMaris answered and I "poured" out my story, as to how late it was in the year, that I was in all kinds of trouble because of the delay, etc, etc, and asked if she could help me in getting the picture done. She said, "I'm sorry but Mr. deMaris died two weeks ago." After expressing my sympathy, etc, I asked it the painting was completed. She replied, "I'm sorry, I do not know, I am blind". After expressing further sympathy, etc, I asked if any one was there who could look it up an dlet me know, etc. She then said "I'm sorry, but my daughter who lives with me was taken to the hospital yesterday and I am all alone" So, there are indeed all kinds of trouble adn back of many a picture there is a story-just as there is to this one.

This painting was one of his last works, it was picked up at his house shortly after he passed away, there is not a signature because it is believed he hadn't finished it completely.
